Immunity Booster in the New Year

Happy New Year!  I’m starting 2022 by boosting my immunity and share a three part series on how I’m doing it.

Is there a better booster?

I gave in and took the COVID vaccination because I wanted to travel to the UK and see my kids and grandkids.

Now it’s all about the booster.  Should we have it?

The MD I used for my latest physical (I should still be around for quite awhile) took a blood test to check antibodies.  If they are strong, I’ll skip the booster unless its required for some place I feel I really want to be.

Personally I feel like there are better ways!

I work at keeping my immune system strong so want to share the thoughts below from my friend and Vedic astrologer Blaine Watson.

Blaine wrote: Immunity is apparently the topic of the day. At least that is what I woke up with this morning. Keeping the immune system strong and vibrant is relatively easy. Since the digestive system forms 70-80% of the immune system it is entirely logical to assume that a healthy digestive system results in strong immunity. This is Vaidya Mishra’s family tradition also; take care of digestion and virtually everything else will be taken care. Here are some simple suggestions that we learned from him that work for us:

1. Alkalize the body with water that is naturally high in pH. Water that has been filtered and chlorinated is considered dead. Healthy water, unfiltered, straight from the source and naturally high in pH will alkalize the body very efficiently. An alkaline diet is needed as well

2. Probiotics in the diet every day via yogurt diluted in water (lassi) and drunk at noon. We make our own yogurt fresh every day. It takes only minutes and becomes yogurt overnight.

We bring 4 cups of milk to a boil. Let cool to body temperature. Put into 4 cups with about 1/4 tsp of yogurt in the bottom of each cup. We place them in a yogurt maker which is essentially a warming plate with a plastic dome over it. They are available in almost any health food store. Barring that if some one has an old fashioned over with an incandescent light bulb in it, they can put them cups with lids on in the oven with the light on all night long and it will be yogurt by morning. If you are in a tropical country where the temperature is quite warm all night or all day if you want to make it in the day time, then you can just leave it out on the counter. That is what we did and do in Africa and India

We also take probiotic capsules every day. The most important bacteria are acidophilus, bulgaricus and bifidus but the more the merrier. The more varieties of bacteria and the more quantities of bacteria. They aid with digestion and B12 uptake I think because they help with mood also. B12 in the diet is essential for mental/emotional stability which is also important for immunity. This is for all you vegans out there who are not getting B12 in your diet. We will occasionally have sauerkraut to get a different type of bacteria with the fermentation but not often. The acidity of the fermentation can create a lower pH.

3. Vitamin C and D and Zinc are essential for immunity and healthy digestion as well. We get ours through diet and lots of light. Canadian winters are challenging as far as Vitamin D production by the body is concerned so we use dietary sources in the winter.

4. Ayurveda says the main meal should be when the sun is high. Light breakfast, heavier lunch and light evening meal is a good rule of thumb.

5. Fresh, home cooked food, organic. Avoid processed food. If you avoid the centre aisles in a store you will be doing your body a favour. Anything that can sit on a shelf for months with out spoiling should not be considered food.

6. Eat what is digestible, especially if you have issues with your skin, eczema, psoriasis etc. What the skin looks like is what the lining of the bowel looks like. So eating digestible food such as summer squashes and tapioca and barley and okra and other foods that have a slipperiness to them will not put strain on the bowels and allow them to heal themselves. The slipperiness of these foods absorb toxins and slide them out of the system as well. Avoid pumpkin and winter squashes. They can be the source of serious skin disease. They are very dry and dryness aggravates vata. we eat only small lentils for the same reason. Beans are very dry and the larger the bean the more dryness we are absorbing. So we eat French lentils, masoor Dahl, the small red ones, moong beans and yellow split moong beans, beluga lentils and kulthi lentils when we can get them because kulthi will break up any stones in the kidneys and gall bladder.

7. Regular to bed. And regular to wake up. The body thrives on routine. Meditation. Yoga. Exercise on a regular basis. Fresh air and sunshine and nature.

These are a few of things we do for our immunity. I am sure there are many other things

NK cells tend to lose functionality as you age, leaving you more susceptible to disease, including viral infections such as influenza and cancer. The medical term for this degeneration is “immune senescence.” The good news is you can counteract this decline in a number of different ways, including the following:

The spice is Cardamom.

Webmd.com (3) explains that the herb cardamom is used for digestion problems including heartburn, intestinal spasms, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea, constipation, liver and gallbladder complaints, and loss of appetite.

Most importantly, it is also used for common cold and other infections, cough, bronchitis, sore mouth and throat, urinary problems, epilepsy, headache, and high blood pressure.

Cardamom can improve breathing and oxygen use.

Compounds in cardamom may help increase airflow to your lungs and improve breathing.

When used in aromatherapy, cardamom can provide an invigorating odor that enhances your body’s ability to use oxygen during exercise.

These headstones show that the residents here lived to age 86, 91, 95, 100 years and one passed at 115 years of age.  The headstone says she was born in 1794 and left this world in 1909.  Imagine what she saw living during three centuries!

The secrets from their headstones are clear.  First, some places are healthier than others.   Second, lifestyle affects longevity more than quadruple bypasses, pacemakers, chemo, radiation, modern medicine and drugs.  These people were dirt poor mountain farmers and did not have health insurance, hospitals or regular checkups.  Some may have never seen a doctor.  Third, a simple, natural life can be filled with good health, energy, relaxation and strength.

Clean air, pure water and fresh food are important medicines!  These hardy mountain people worked hard and kept life simple.  Longevity was their reward.  Modern medicine does many wonderful things to manage illness.  But the imbalanced Western way of life does not do much that encourages wellness.

Secret #2: have more than a routine.  Create ritual!  Those who live extra-ordinarily long lives seem to share this common trait.  Whatever they do, they do in moderation, in a very similar way and with great gusto.  For example, if they drink an ounce of whisky every day, at six o clock, they do not do this some days at five o clock some days and other days at eight.  They do not have a half ounce one day and two another.  They tend to have one ounce at six p.m. every day.  This instills discipline, keeps life simple (very important) and allows the body to get used to doing whatever it is it has to do.  Take Chris Mortensen one of the oldest documented men in the 1990s who at 113 said of his weekly cigar, “If you take my weekly cigar away from me, I am going to die”.  The anticipation and ritual of whatever pleasure he receives from this is far more life-giving than the stress.  The world’s oldest documented woman in the 1990s, Jeanne Clement, at age 122 drank cognac and ate a pound of chocolate a week (but never two pounds).

Secret #3: remain independent, challenged, active and needed.  One of the most important features found in isolated Ecuadorian valleys where people live long lives is that old age was revered.  Often people at age 100, even 110 are still active and working!  Max Zimmer of Los Angeles came to the US from Austria in 1911 with only a two dollar bill.  At age 103 he still had the same two-dollar bill and had built and still ran a multimillion-dollar business.

One medical doctor, who specializes in anti-aging, points out that most centenarians seldom spend much time with doctors.  When they finally get sick, they die quickly and with little expense.  They depend on themselves to remain healthy, not others.

First, body fat and cancer?  Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  The blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, and other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.  Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-soluble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.
