A slower heart rate has been shown to extend longevity and last week I stumbled onto one way to do slow the old pumper down
Well, actually I’ve known about this technique for decades and written about it numerous times…but I have now verified its effectiveness in another way.
When I had COVID last year, I purchased and used a pulse oximeter because silent hypoxia is one way the virus kills. Silent hypoxia is created when the coronavirus attacks lung cells in a way the air sacs collapse, oxygen levels fall yet the lungs initially remain “compliant,” not stiff or heavy with fluid. This means patients can still expel carbon dioxide — and without a buildup of carbon dioxide, patients do not feel short of breath.
Patients don’t feel any sensation of breathing problems, even though they have diffuse pneumonia and their oxygen is below normal.
The pulse oximeter overcomes this problem with the click of one button it displays oxygen saturation and pulse rate. Pulse oximeters are extremely reliable in detecting oxygenation problems and elevated heart rates.
So last week when when I contracted a cold, I hooked up my pulse oximeter… just in case.
Everything was normal, oxygen level was 99 and heart rate in the 70s.
Then had an idea. I was about to do my daily meditation so I left the oximeter on my finger to see what happened to my heart rate and oxygen level.
During the meditation, the oxygen saturation remained the same, but my resting heart rate dropped from the 70s to the 50s.
Imagine that. Top athletes, much y0ouner than this senior citizen, might get a heart rate in the 40s, but a heart rate on the 50s puts one in the top ten percent according to the healthy.io website (1)!

That’s good! A slower heart rate may translate into longer life.
The Harvard Heart Letter (2) tells why.
The report begins: Your heart rate changes from minute to minute. It depends on whether you are standing up or lying down, moving around or sitting still, stressed or relaxed. When you have been at rest for a bit, the heartbeat settles down; this is your resting heart rate. Slowing it with exercise and stress reduction may help you enjoy more beats, reports the December 2008 issue of the Harvard Heart Letter.
Sixty years ago, researchers showed that men with fast resting heart rates were more likely to develop high blood pressure than those with slower rates. Since then, a high resting heart rate has been linked to atherosclerosis, sudden death, and an increased risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. Why? Each pulse of blood puts a mild stress on artery walls. More beats per minute means more stress. A faster heartbeat also gives the coronary arteries less time to fill with blood. This can lead to an imbalance between heart cells’ demand for oxygen and the heart’s ability to provide it.

A Wall Street Journal article entitled “Ways to Inflate Your IQ”(1) show how you can be smarter and actually add matter to your brain. The article says:

Now, a growing body of research is showing that a person’s IQ can rise—and even fall—over the years.
Scores can change gradually or quickly, after as little as a few weeks of cognitive training, research shows.
British students were given IQ tests and brain scans at ages 12 to 16 and again about four years later. 9% of the students showed a significant change of 15 points or more in IQ scores.
The study published in Nature said that on a scale where 90 to 110 is considered average, one student’s IQ rose 21 points to 128 from 107, lifting the student from the 68th percentile to the 97th compared with others the same age.
MRIs in this study showed changes in gray matter in areas corresponding to fluctuations in the kid’s skills.
There are practical steps people can take to see longer-term IQ changes. New tasks stimulate the brain most. Young adults given just one month of intense training in juggling, found an increase in the corresponding gray matter in the brain as early as seven days after the training began.
Fluctuations in IQ scores over time underscore the brain-boosting benefits of musical training and new experiences throughout a lifetime.
Music lessons are linked to higher IQ throughout life. Six years’ lessons lifted children’s IQ scores an average 7.5 points.
