The Easter message we share today was given to me nearly three decades ago but remains true.
That sharing took place many years ago at an Easter sunrise service… in Naples, Florida at Unity Church.
Jake Kern the Unity minister, after building and being head of Unity in Naples for decades, was retiring. This was to be his last sermon and in the tradition there the service was outside… in a pine woods… around a bonfire. Taking in the morning chill… the rising moist and bird song… we waited.
Then Jack began… a message to me about renewal of life and a major shift of rejuvenation at age 50. I still remember it well 25 years later.
Jack began by sharing a Bible verse Leviticus 25:9-12 which says:
“You shall have the trumpet sounded throughout all your land. And you shall hallow the fiftieth year and you shall proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you: you shall return, every one of you, to your property and every one of you to your family. That fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you: you shall not sow, or reap the aftergrowth, or harvest the unpruned vines. For it is a jubilee; it shall be holy to you: you shall eat only what the field itself produces.”
A year of jublilee… at age 50. What a nice thought… a powerful thought of renewal and growth at any age.
This thought helped me understand the important of keeping one’s activities… one’s business and lifestyle in balance with the rhythms of nature.
The importance of seven is pretty clear… Sabbath is the seventh day. We have all heard of taking a sabbatical. This is the time when we leave the old cycle and rest before shifting gears and beginning anew. We have all heard of the seven year itch. Is this the body saying, “Hey Bud, time to shift”.
The Vedic and Andean philosophy is that at about this time (age 50) we should begin to reduce the material aspect of our life and become more spiritual.
Life sciences from India and the Andes suggest that the first 50 years of life should take care of the material and the second 50, the spiritual.
Here is what Jack’s Easter message meant to me. There is a time and place for everything. Our being has been created with a incredible gift… a great inner wisdom that helps us to to take different steps… accomplish different goals at different times in our life.
If we recognize and take advantage of this inherent intelligence within and use it in our entire life….including business… investing and lives, we’ll do better and find life more fulfilling.
This ,to me, does not mean we have to give up our possessions and drop out of the material world. Technology allows us to have positive, service oriented businesses that bring good to mankind and the world.
This sense of spiritual business rejuvenation appears to be taking place. The older population are applying the experience and wisdom they have gained in businesses that help make the world a better place.
A USA Today article entitled “Older entrepreneurs find new niche in startups” by Lynn Hicks, of the Des Moines Register suggests that boomers still lead the way in helping Western society evolve.
Here is an excerpt (bolds are mine): Did you see 27-year-old Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg? Or maybe Ben Milne, who created two successful companies in his 20s, including the mobile payment darling Dwolla? Or Ben Silbermann, who 10 years after graduating from Des Moines’ Roosevelt High School helped launch one of the fastest growing websites ever with Pinterest?
But if you look beyond those headline-grabbing names, you’re more likely to find a baby boomer launching a new business.
Over the past decade, the highest rate of entrepreneurial activity belongs to the 55 to 64 age group, according to a study by the Kauffman Foundation, a Kansas City, Mo.-based entrepreneurship institute. The 20 to 34 age bracket has the lowest rate.
Kauffman’s latest study shows that about 23% of new entrepreneurs in 2010 were in the 55 to 64 age group, compared with 15% in 1996.
“We tell clients, ‘We’ve made lot of mistakes and we’re not likely to repeat them.’ Lots of people in their 40s and 50s come to Colwell to discuss launching a business.
“They have a passion for something. They see a problem that needs to be solved,” he said.
Boomers often have some natural advantages for entrepreneurship, including experience, expertise and finances.
“Many baby boomers are not interested in retirement. They’re always interested in building something,”.
Merri and I send our best wishes that this will be a joyous time of renewal for you.

The foundation of human society is the ability to communicate ideas through words. Words support a framework of love, hate and desire and all the emotions throbbing through the heartbeat of mankind.
Writing builds shelters against the storms of stagnation and creates progressive energy that artistically leads us from the tyrannical grasp of existing thought into new dimensions and ideas.
Marco Polo photo
Take Marco Polo and the impact he had on changing the thought process of the Western world.
Marco Polo was a merchant and an explorer. He saw wonders when he ventured into the Eastern world. When he shared these wonders it altered the entire way that mankind in Europe lived… from the introduction of gun powder to paper money.
Yet what made Marco famous was his ability to share these innovations due to his writing!
Biography.com says of Marco Polo’s exploits (bolds are mine): Just a few years after his return to Venice, Marco commanded a ship in a war against the rival city of Genoa. He was eventually captured and sentenced to a Genoese prison, where he met a fellow prisoner and writer named Rustichello. As the two men became friends, Marco told Rustichello about his time in Asia, what he’d seen, where he’d traveled and what he’d accomplished. His stories were soon committed to paper and eventually published as a book called The Description of the World,
The book made Marco, who was released from prison in 1299, a celebrity. It was printed in French, Italian and Latin, becoming the most popular read in Europe. But few readers allowed themselves to believe Marco’s tale. They took it to be fiction, the construct of a man with a wild imagination. The work eventually earned another title: Il Milione (“The Million Lies”). Marco, however, stood behind his book. He also moved on with his life. After his release from prison, he returned to Venice, where he married, raised three daughters and, for some 25 years, carried on the family business. Marco died at his home in Venice on January 8, 1324. As he lay dying, friends and fans of his book paid him visits, urging him to admit that his book was fiction. Marco wouldn’t relent. “I have not told half of what I saw,” he said.
Marco’s desire to earn more money, his travels and adventures were the foundation of his destiny, but his writing was his legacy. Here is one more excerpt from Biography.com.
In the centuries since his death, Marco Polo has received the recognition that failed to come his way during his lifetime. So much of what he claimed to have seen has been verified by researchers, academics and other explorers. Even if his accounts came from other travelers he met along the way, Marco’s story has inspired countless other adventurers to set off and see the world. Two centuries after Marco’s passing, Christopher Columbus set off across the Atlantic in hopes of finding a new route to the Orient. With him was a copy of Marco Polo’s book.
Writing to sell is one of the most powerful forms of marketing and marketing is what we do in every aspect of life… every day.
The heart of all events requires marketing. We market ourselves, our business, our thoughts ideas and beliefs all the time. In business, marketing covers strategic planning, product design, packaging, distribution, advertising, public relations, promotions and sales. Marketing is the process by which anything and everything, product, service, idea, person is introduced and promoted. Without marketing, you may be or have something great, but no one knows it.
All marketing begins with writing… whether, a speech, picture, video, movie, advertisement, announcement, banner, jingle, song… the birth place is in the written word.
Why words are better than cash.
You can turn words into cash. Mix in a little wisdom and deliver benefits. The value of honest word’s never deflate. A dollar, decades ago, was worth 15 greenbacks today… or more. Useful, wise words, even hundreds of years aged… are often worth more now.
Take these 153 year old words: “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”
Has time diminished the value of these words?
