Hostility is everywhere. Aggressive lawyers. Bungling bureaucrats. Cheating brokers. Forceful taxmen. Lying politicians. Money grabbing health system, Tricky businesses. Fraudulent bankers.
To name just a few.
These attacks make us feel persecuted… and could make us angry. In fact they probably do, but let’s use that anger as a productive, not destructive force.
Now we have a new federal administration and a lot of people are angry about that.
I receive many comments from readers sharing their hate for one politician or the other. That anger takes up a lot of energy but I have made this complex problem simple. I distrust them all.
I don’t feel I could possibly know enough to really understand what good or bad they are doing. To me the Clintons, Bush Jr., Obama and Trump all belong in the same miserable ineffective system that was never looking out for my interests.
I can go all the way back to the 1970s when we began publishing our mantra “Live in one country, earn income in a second, bank in a third, hold assets in a fourth through a company in a fifth run from an office in a sixth. Plus keep some precious metals buried somewhere”. We called this the “Seven point command posture” and the idea was to keep our hard earned efforts out of the hands of the politicians.
That approach is so effective that a lot of US legislation was passed over the decades to make the posture impractical for most of us.
Our messages for 50 years have been all about how to earn everywhere, invest outside the USA, live out of big cities and or outside the country and avoid the health care system as much as possible.
Not one of my equity investments in our Purposeful Investing Course portfolio has been in the US equity markets for over five years.
Yet I am not angry with the politicos because its an impossible job. Plus when we tune our focus on the bigger older picture, we see history strongly suggesting that holding together any type of big organization for the long term is insurmounatble.
So why should we be angry? The world is just being what it is… the world and the only error is ours, letting the values we perceive as correct, blinding us to the realities of the world.
America’s decline should not be a surprise and it’s not for everyone.
For example, Merri and I noticed that over the decades, our international investing business attracted a disproportionate number of US southerners, Chiropractors and people of the Jewish faith. This puzzled me for years.
“What is the connection?” I asked again and again. Then one day the answer hit me. “The connection is persecution”.
Many Southerners felt persecuted since the War between the States. Chiropractors felt persecuted by the AMA. The history of Jewish persecution has been repeated again and again.
The connection between these three groups and international investing was that they did not trust the establishment. They were angry and looking for alternate solutions in investing.
This focus allowed us to fill events with readers looking for alternative, non establishment, ways to earn, invest and have natural health.
Expect almost everyone to be angry, but don’t be yourself. Take advantage of the anger instead!

The article says: Many retirement communities have declined to name names during the pandemic. So she started a newsletter to do just that.
Diana Wiener wanted information and was not getting it. So last May, at age 80, Ms. Wiener went into the news business.
“I’d had it with this whole secrecy thing,” she said the other day.
For Ms. Wiener, this lack of information was dangerous. “Every time we went to the doctor, they would ask you, have you been in contact with anyone?” she said. “How do I know? They’re not telling us anything. If we don’t know, how can we say we haven’t been in contact?”
“That really infuriated me,” she said. “I just felt it was dismissing us as little babies — go to your room and be quiet. I decided that I was going to do this and I did it. Somebody has to stand up.”
Ms. Wiener, who had no journalism experience, recruited a friend to proofread and found a local printer who would make 170 glossy copies. That was all she needed. In May, she and a couple of neighbors slipped the debut issue of The Buzz, 12 pages, under the doors of Five Star’s 146 independent living apartments.
At the top of the first page Ms. Wiener wrote, “Isn’t it time for a newsletter by us, for us?” The first issue included some news: contrary to the building’s official daily emails, which did not mention deaths in the building, 13 people at Five Star had died of the coronavirus since March.
Ms. Wiener wrote: “We are not children, to be confined to our rooms, to have the names of those who are sick, or have died, withheld from us. This is our community. These are our neighbors, our people. Our family.”
The next issue added the names of the dead and hospitalized.
For the residents, the newsletter struck a chord.
In the fourth issue, in August, Ms. Wiener protested that residents could not use the facility’s garden, citing other buildings that allowed their residents to congregate safely on the grounds. “The issue went out on a Saturday,” she said. “On Monday the garden was open.” She credited the newsletter for the change. Other issues prompted the resumption of meetings of the tenants association, which had stopped during the pandemic. “It made a tremendous difference in the quality of life here, there’s no doubt about it,” she said.
She has heard from neighbors who want to organize for other causes as well. “One woman has tried to figure out what to do with all the food that’s being wasted, how to get it to food banks or local churches,” she said. “These are the women and men who worked in every organization for the last 60 years. A lot of ex-teachers. They’re organizers, they’re fund-raisers. They did all this. I didn’t, really. It wasn’t my thing. But The Buzz stirs it up.”
Now, as she prepares issue No. 9, she intends to use the newsletter to protest against rent increases, especially since the building has curtailed services during the pandemic.
And she has lately started to think more broadly. What if The Buzz started a movement of resident newsletters around the country? Surely, hers was not the only big mouth out there. With the web service Substack, which enables people to create and distribute newsletters online, writers could reach not just residents but their families as well.
“And monetizing it to boot,” she wrote in an email.
It was a lot to consider. She added: “What a great time to be writing, in spite of Covid!”

Biography.com says of Marco Polo’s exploits (bolds are mine): Just a few years after his return to Venice, Marco commanded a ship in a war against the rival city of Genoa. He was eventually captured and sentenced to a Genoese prison, where he met a fellow prisoner and writer named Rustichello. As the two men became friends, Marco told Rustichello about his time in Asia, what he’d seen, where he’d traveled and what he’d accomplished. His stories were soon committed to paper and eventually published as a book called The Description of the World,
The book made Marco, who was released from prison in 1299, a celebrity. It was printed in French, Italian and Latin, becoming the most popular read in Europe. But few readers allowed themselves to believe Marco’s tale. They took it to be fiction, the construct of a man with a wild imagination. The work eventually earned another title: Il Milione (“The Million Lies”). Marco, however, stood behind his book. He also moved on with his life. After his release from prison, he returned to Venice, where he married, raised three daughters and, for some 25 years, carried on the family business. Marco died at his home in Venice on January 8, 1324. As he lay dying, friends and fans of his book paid him visits, urging him to admit that his book was fiction. Marco wouldn’t relent. “I have not told half of what I saw,” he said.
Marco’s desire to earn more money, his travels and adventures were the foundation of his destiny, but his writing was his legacy. Here is one more excerpt from Biography.com.
