Lemons at Any Age

by | Jan 11, 2021 | Archives

Birthdays beyond 65 or 70 or even 80 are not lemons.

Even if maturity had a sour taste, a recent message at this site “When a year goes to the dogs” reminded us”that we can make lemonade” when we get a lemon.

To my way of thinking the advanced years are actually the best time to build and accumulate wealth.

A recent USA Today article, “‘It’s never too late’: Entrepreneurial spirit drives older women” supports this thought.

The article published in partnership with The 19th, gives many examples of women who have started businesses in their 70s.

The image from the article below shows Mary Rawles who worked full-time as a school teacher while raising two children.   Now, in the midst of the pandemic at age 73-yeara she launched her first business using the internet to help viewers workout and deal with weight loss.

Wow! I am impressed.  The article also tells about Eileen Spitalny, a 54-year-old who runs a bakery in Phoenix. And 52-year-old Kelley Nayo Jahi who recently launched her third business , a group gift service that offers products from Black and Latino small-business owners.

Another story is about Teri Cox, 73, who started her jewelry business after she retired from a high-stress career in property management.  She said “There’s still lots of living to do”.

The article says: “I used to think of aging as a period of decline,” Rawles said. “For me, so far, the 70s are the most exciting decade I’ve lived. I have more time because I’m not raising kids and I’m retired, so I have a little bit of economic security. Because of that, it’s a time where I can really grow.”

And researchers found an increase in entrepreneurial activity among older people in the United Kingdom, specifically. When asked why they wanted to set up a business later in life, twice as many women than men said they wanted to realize “a long-held ambition,” according to the report, published in 2020.

Angel Cornelius, 60, started her business making and selling beauty products as a side hustle while still working as a clinic manager at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. At first, she only intended to make products for herself in her kitchen — she had a hard time finding products that worked for her silver hair. Then her friends started asking to buy her homemade body butters and soaps.

“I consider my age a strength, because I understand the maturing process, what women need, how we want to be spoken to and how we want to be viewed,” Cornelius said.

Lisa Marrone, the co-founder of Revel, an online community for women who are 50 and older, said she founded the company in 2019 because that demographic is often viewed as “less than” and made to feel invisible. The community currently has about 2,800 members globally, she said.

These women have shown a lot of creativity and innovation.  One person mentioned,  76-year-old Ellen Curtis, was told by her doctor that her blood pressure was too high. He suggested a career change so now she sells upcycled jean jackets and hand-sewn face masks.

“Women have taken that leap of faith to carve a niche for themselves,” Curtis said. “The people that I’ve encountered are very happy. A lot of us said we should have done this long ago.”

All of us, men and women should take this leap in faith to do what we have always wanted.  Age is not a barrier!

A Business Insider interview of a 99 year old real estate broker proves this fact.

The article says: Real estate agent Stewart Wade rises at 5:30 or 6 most mornings, swims 500-600 strokes in the Pacific, and then heads to work by 8 a.m.

It’s pretty impressive for anyone, but especially for a 99-year-old.

Wade, an employee of real estate firm Coldwell Banker since 1999, says he is still working 20 or so hours a week because he just loves his job. “I’ve thought about [retiring], but what would I do?” he asks. “I enjoy real estate so much it would be hard to leave.”   In his free time, he attends the local country club and also volunteers at the Boy Scouts and the YMCA.

Wade believes a good attitude and regular exercise have helped him lead such a long and happy life. “Attitude is so important,” he says. He also advises having clear-cut goals, and realizing that there’s more to life than money.

Finally, for those people approaching retirement age (typically 65 to 70 in the U.S.), Wade says don’t be afraid to keep going. In fact, his best years of work were recent ones.

“I made more money in my 80s than I ever did in the rest of my life,” he says. “I was very healthy and very vigorous.”.

In other words, “age does not matter”.   You can turn your passion into profit.  Do what you love in a fulfilling way that serves your community.

Escape the tyranny of retirement.  Choose a “pinnacle career “.

You can create a pinnacle career at any age.

marco polo

Marco Polo photo

Take Marco Polo and the impact he had on changing the thought process of the Western world.

Marco Polo was a merchant and an explorer.  He saw wonders when he ventured into the Eastern world.   When he shared these wonders it altered the entire way that mankind in Europe lived…  from the introduction of gun powder to paper money.

Yet what made Marco famous was his ability  to share these innovations due to his writing!

Biography.com says of Marco Polo’s exploits (bolds are mine):   Just a few years after his return to Venice, Marco commanded a ship in a war against the rival city of Genoa. He was eventually captured and sentenced to a Genoese prison, where he met a fellow prisoner and writer named Rustichello. As the two men became friends, Marco told Rustichello about his time in Asia, what he’d seen, where he’d traveled and what he’d accomplished. His stories were soon committed to paper and eventually published as a book called The Description of the World,

The book made Marco, who was released from prison in 1299, a celebrity. It was printed in French, Italian and Latin, becoming the most popular read in Europe. But few readers allowed themselves to believe Marco’s tale. They took it to be fiction, the construct of a man with a wild imagination. The work eventually earned another title: Il Milione (“The Million Lies”). Marco, however, stood behind his book. He also moved on with his life. After his release from prison, he returned to Venice, where he married, raised three daughters and, for some 25 years, carried on the family business.

Marco died at his home in Venice on January 8, 1324. As he lay dying, friends and fans of his book paid him visits, urging him to admit that his book was fiction. Marco wouldn’t relent. “I have not told half of what I saw,” he said.

Marco’s desire to earn more money, his travels and adventures were the foundation of his destiny, but his writing was his legacy.  Here is one more excerpt from Biography.com.

In the centuries since his death, Marco Polo has received the recognition that failed to come his way during his lifetime. So much of what he claimed to have seen has been verified by researchers, academics and other explorers. Even if his accounts came from other travelers he met along the way, Marco’s story has inspired countless other adventurers to set off and see the world. Two centuries after Marco’s passing, Christopher Columbus set off across the Atlantic in hopes of finding a new route to the Orient. With him was a copy of Marco Polo’s book.

Writing to sell is one of the most powerful forms of marketing  and marketing is what we do in every aspect of life… every day.

The heart of all events requires marketing.  We market ourselves, our business, our thoughts ideas and beliefs all the time.  In business, marketing covers strategic planning, product design, packaging, distribution, advertising, public relations, promotions and sales.  Marketing is the process by which anything and everything, product, service, idea, person is introduced and promoted. Without marketing, you may be or have something great, but no one knows it.

All marketing begins with writing… whether, a speech, picture, video, movie, advertisement, announcement, banner,  jingle, song… the birth place is in the written word.

Why words are better than cash.

You can turn words into cash.  Mix in a little wisdom and deliver benefits.  The value of honest word’s never deflate.  A dollar, decades ago, was worth 15 greenbacks today… or more.   Useful, wise words, even hundreds of years aged… are often worth more now.

Take these 153 year old words: “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

Has time diminished the value of these words?

Sometimes Merri’s and my writing led us into incredible adventures.
