Memory loss and mental deficiency are increasingly being linked to nutritional and blood sugar problems.

Can oatmeal help us think more clearly?


A recent article at, “The Dark Truth Behind Sugar” (1) points out a link between sugar, memory losss and dementia.

The article says: Could you be prediabetic? According to the United States CDC, one-third of Americans are prediabetic and 90% of them, some 100 million, do not know it.

When researches compared blood sugar of 249 healthy adults in their 60s, there was a significant increase in brain atrophy and shrinkage in those whose blood sugars were high, but still in normal range, as set by the World Health Organization.

High-normal blood sugars can glycate, or clump together, sticking to proteins in the blood, becoming what are called advance glycation end products (AGEs). Studies show that AGEs may be the smoking gun for one’s chances of developing liver, kidney, heart, joint, or cognitive issues over time.

The article explains how sugar triggers dopamine receptors in the brain. Dopamine is the gotta-have-it-now hormone.  Most of us were raised on sugar… addicted early on so it became our poison of choice for life.

The article goes on to show that high-fructose corn syrup may be even worse.

While sugar is our new poison, linked to numerous chronic health issues,processed sugar is even worse. Americans consume more than half the world’s supply of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a processed sugar linked to weight gain, cardiovascular issues, and cognitive issues now known as type 3 diabetes.

Research on the woes of HFCS has lead scientists to understand more about the difference between sucrose and fructose. Sucrose, or white table sugar, contains glucose, which the body, muscles, and brain can readily use. Fructose has a different story and needs to be understood.

Some 22 million years ago, apes in Africa lived on fruits picked right off trees. Around 17 million years ago, the earth cooled and the ice caps grew larger, leaving land bridges where the nomadic apes could migrate north.

As the earth cooled, fruit trees were replaced with deciduous trees, and soon what is now Europe and Asia was filled with starving apes. At some point, an intelligent genetic mutation occurred that allowed apes to store fructose as fat to endure long winters, rather than burn it quickly as food and energy. Many of these apes migrated back into Africa, passing the fructose-storing gene to the original African apes and possibly enabling them to forage for new sources of food.

According to scientists, this mutation was so powerful that only apes with the mutation survived to become our ancestors. Today, we carry this same gene, which has made high-fructose corn syrup our new poison.

In other words sugar and high-fructose corn syrup can not only lead to diabetes, liver, kidney, heart and joint distress, it can ruin our thinking!

Oats are known to lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels and they are nutritious in other ways also.  Oats are a very good source of fiber and are high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.  Oats are believed to have protective effects against both heart disease and cancer.

Not All Oats Are Created Equal.

When it comes to modulating blood sugar, not all oats are anywhere close to the same.  Oats comes in numerous forms.

  • Whole oat grains or kernels (oat groats).  These oats are harvested and the outer hull is removed.
  • Steel cut oats (or Irish oats).  Oat groats are cut 2 to 3 times with a steel blade (‘steel cut’).
  • Whole rolled “Old Fashioned” oats. Oat groats that have been steamed, rolled under heavy rollers and lightly toasted.
  • Quick-cooking whole rolled oats.  Whole rolled oats cut into smaller pieces so they cook more quickly
  • Instant oatmeal.  Thinly rolled or cut oats that absorb water much more easily and therefore cook faster.
  • Oat bran.  This fiber-rich outer layer of the grain is often consumed separately as a cereal, with muesli or in breads.
  • Infant oatmeal.  Oats processed into powder.

Blood sugar control is a benefit of oats but not all oats offer equal modulation.   According to the American Diabetes Association, rolled oatmeal, steel-cut oatmeal, and oat bran are all low glycemic index foods, with a Glycemic Index (GI) value of 55 or less.

Quick oats have a medium GI, with a value of 56-69.

Instant oatmeal is considered a high GI food, with a value of 70 or more.

Oat groats, steel-cut oats or rolled oats are best for modulating blood sugar.

Preparation can make oats even healthier.

Oats are a good food for maintaining blood sugar, but research shows that three steps of preparation make oatmeal’s glycemic index even lower.  Step #1. Cook it. Step #2: Chill it.  Step #3: Reheat it.

Oat groats, steel-cut oats or rolled oats are best for modulating blood sugar and research has found that whole oats contain more fat than most other grains, ranging from 5-9%, mostly of unsaturated fatty acids.  Oats contain more protein and fat than most other grains.

Pure oats are gluten-free, plus the starch porridge oats contain feeds good bacteria in the gut, the health of which is increasingly being linked by scientists to the brain.   Additionally, it provides a great stream of sustained energy to power the brain.

An article at, “Foods That Induce Memory Loss” (2) leads to that evidence that oats help promote brain health.

The article says: Unfortunately, the foods that hamper memory are common staples in the American diet. White breads, pasta, processed meats and cheeses, all of these have been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Some experts have even found that whole grain breads are as bad as white breads because they spike blood sugar, which causes inflammation.

DEMENTIA symptoms include memory loss and problems thinking, but adding porridge oats to your diet could help prevent brain decline.

The starch porridge oats contain feeds good bacteria in the gut, the health of which is increasingly being linked by scientists to the brain.

Additionally, it provides a great stream of sustained energy to power the brain.

Drizzling honey on top could also help according to recent research.  Eating honey daily could reduce the risk of developing dementia, scientists found.  Although high in sugar, honey could prevent neuroinflammation in the hippocampus section of the brain – part of the brain that’s directly involved in spatial memory.  Honey possesses natural antioxidants, and therapeutic properties, that help to prevent cognitive decline and dementia, scientists claimed.

Personally, I buy steel cut oats and oat groats in bulk.  I like the creamy nature of steel cut oats and the chewy feel of oat groats.  I toast and cook a week’s supply of 50-50 steel cut and oat groat at a time.  I store this in the fridge and then reheat breakfast each day.  This saves time and provides a convenient and fast healthy reheated breakfast whenever I want it on a busy day.

A Wall Street Journal article entitled “Ways to Inflate Your IQ”(1)  show how you can be smarter and actually add matter to your brainThe article says:

           Many people think of IQ as a genetic trait, like brown eyes or short legs: You’re born with it and you’re stuck with it.

Now, a growing body of research is showing that a person’s IQ can rise—and even fall—over the years.

Scores can change gradually or quickly, after as little as a few weeks of cognitive training, research shows.

British students were given IQ tests and brain scans at ages 12 to 16 and again about four years later.  9% of the students showed a significant change of 15 points or more in IQ scores.

The study published in Nature said that on a scale where 90 to 110 is considered average, one student’s IQ rose 21 points to 128 from 107, lifting the student from the 68th percentile to the 97th compared with others the same age. 

MRIs in this study showed changes in gray matter in areas corresponding to fluctuations in the kid’s skills.

There are practical steps people can take to see longer-term IQ changes.  New tasks stimulate the brain most.  Young adults given just one month of intense training in juggling, found an increase in the corresponding gray matter in the brain as early as seven days after the training began.

Fluctuations in IQ scores over time underscore the brain-boosting benefits of musical training and new experiences throughout a lifetime.

Music lessons are linked to higher IQ throughout life.  Six years’ lessons lifted children’s IQ scores an average 7.5 points.
