There are many good reasons to invest in agriculture and agricultural land.
As the world becomes more complex, our investing needs more simplicity and one of the simplest ideas of all is that everyone has to eat every day.
Merri and I have slowly been increasing our agricultural land bank… 962 acres in Ecuador… 252 acres in North Carolina… 16 acres in Florida. Right now we are looking at another 53 acre orange grove in Florida.
In Ecuador we have looked at and taken readers to the Cotacachi organic winery.
and Cotacachi local organic cheese factory.
Visiting the caves of the Cotacachi cheese factory.
Both are rare in Ecuador.
In Ashe County North Carolina we have kept an eye on the local organic New River winery near our farm.

During our North Carolina courses we take delegates to the New River Winery for a wine tasting. The winery is housed in another old WPA building which originally was the Lansing school.

“New River’s dry wines include a medium bodied peppery Noiret, an light bodied Baco Noir from certified organically grown grapes, a full fruit Traminette and a clean crisp Seyval. Back Porch Blueberry leads New River’s fruit menu as an unusual off-dry full-fruit blueberry wine. The Sweet Briar Blackberry, Tickled Pink (Raspberry), and Fragaria (Strawberry) have all gained a reputation as delicately balance semi-sweet fruit wine selections.”
The winery started small and is growing by leaps and bounds. Vineyards and wineries are one of the fastest growing business sectors in North Carolina. Now it has reached the point where the founders who started this venture for the fun of it, realize it needs a new owner to take it to the next level.
Recently one of the founders sent this note: Gary, The New River winery is for sale. If you have anyone you think would be interested we have put together all the financials, inventory, licenses, and other relevant due diligence details that can be provided. The price is in the $170,000 range.
He sent along a link to this note from the President of the winery.
New River Winery, Ashe County’s first and only winery, is for sale. The winery, located on the campus of the Old Lansing School, was established seven years ago by a group of investors with ties to Ashe County who were interested in promoting tourism and agriculture in the area. Over the years, the winery has established a reputation for fine wine, a welcoming patio bar, a local music venue, and place to hang out and have a great time.
Lansing Old School.
The winery made its mark in the county by its commitment to deliver fine wines produced locally from local fruit. The winery specializes in wine from high altitude, cold hardy varietals tolerant of the harsh local winters and the short growing season. Unsolicited recognition has praised New River wines as among the finest dry wines in the state. The Noiret, Organic Baco Noir, Traminette, and Seyval are all popular at the tasting bar. The winery is equally well known for its excellent berry wines from blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries – all locally grown.
According to Joe Martin, New River Winery President, the shareholders of New River Winery are eager to find a way to transition the winery to new ownership. “Our first choice would be to find a buyer who will continue in the mission to promote quality local wine and we are prepared to negotiate a an attractive offer”.
The New River Winery presents a unique opportunity for the right purchaser. NRW has an established brand and a well-deserved reputation. Our mission is to make quality wine from local grapes and fruit, and we have done that for the last 7 years. Our present facility has the capacity to produce approximately 1,500 cases of wine per year. NRW is a freestanding winery located in the Old Lansing School in Lansing, North Carolina, but it can be moved since it is not connected to vineyard and other real estate as is typical with other wineries. That also means the NRW does not carry the usual multi-million dollar price tag. NRW is the perfect acquisition for the person who has the vineyard, or the plans for a vineyard, but not a winery. NRW is also the right acquisition for the person who wants a winery, but has no interest in a vineyard.
What makes NRW a great investment:
- An established winery producing a variety of excellent wines made from locally grown grapes and berries
- A well-known brand in the High Country and elsewhere
- Organic certification from Clemson University
- An established wholesale market and the distributorship license to maintain that market without working through a third party distributor
- The ability to relocate to your property
- An up to date web site with online sales capability and social media position
- An excellent position to increase production and sales into the future
