Kissing the Gorilla

Sometimes writing seems like kissing a gorilla… not natural… not safe.

Then again… there are many aspects of life that are not safe…  like our income stream.

Yesterday’s New York Times headline “Recovery in U.S. Is Lifting Profits, but Not Adding Jobs” by Nelson D. Schwartz confirms a huge problem we first pointed out some years ago in our Trading Down series.  That even though some Americans are doing better there is a growing divide between the rich and the poor.

The article says: With the Dow Jones industrial average flirting with a record high, the split between American workers and the companies that employ them is widening and could worsen in the next few months as federal budget cuts take hold.

That gulf helps explain why stock markets are thriving even as the economy is barely growing and unemployment remains stubbornly high.

With millions still out of work, companies face little pressure to raise salaries, while productivity gains allow them to increase sales without adding workers.

“So far in this recovery, corporations have captured an unusually high share of the income gains,” said Ethan Harris, co-head of global economics at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. “The U.S. corporate sector is in a lot better health than the overall economy. And until we get a full recovery in the labor market, this will persist.”

The result has been a golden age for corporate profits, especially among multinational giants that are also benefiting from faster growth in emerging economies like China and India.

This growing divide between the haves and have nots is created by technology.  Big business and governments take more.  Those who have adapted to technology so they can serve and earn in the new technology based economy earn more. Those stuck in the old paradigms earn less or not at all.  There is no static either.  The purchasing power of all currencies is being eroded so we have to earn more to stay even!

Since half the new global economy is about communication… writing and publishing offer one perfect way to earn and get ahead… in an enjoyable way.

Our course “Self Fulfilled – How to be a Writer and Publisher” has three goals… sharing how to write… how to write to sell… and how to publish.  In the how to write section the course shows ways to overcome “Writer’s Block.”

Here is an excerpt from a lesson that dealt with “Writer’s Block”:  The way to overcome the fear and writer’s blocks is to read…  observe…. and then write…. a lot… first to yourself and second anonymously.

For example, what would you do if you were kissed by a Gorilla?

Start Small and Grow

Good writers are good readers, good listeners, good observers and good editors as well as good writers.   Most of all good writers are good story tellers.

Writing skills are honed by hours of observing and converting the observations into written stories that we read to ourselves.

Picture the process of learning to write well like building a pyramid of writing skills from the topside down.  Start small and grow exponentially.

The best way to be successful at writing is… to continually read, listen, observe, and write stories from what we see, hear, taste, touch and smell.

These are the qualities we focus on in our online publishers and writer’s course “Self Fulfilled”.

One section of the course contains writing exercises such as “Kissing the Gorilla”… a lesson aimed at developing  observational skills.

The assignment in the course says “watch the video linked below.   See the wild gorilla kiss the tourist and observe carefully the entire process. Take notes about what was seen.  Write a brief story around what the writer saw.

Here is the video the students see for  observation Kissed by a Gorilla Video

Course students are invited in that lesson to anonymously post what they wrote to the course’s study website so all students can study and comment… to help one another improve their skills.

If you want to earn through writing… read…observe… write.   50% of the global economy is in the communications industry now… so the opportunities in writing and publishing are gorilla sized for those who write well.

The economic world is a scary place for many… when they do not adapt to change. Fortunately technology favors the micro business…. especially in writing and publishing so we look forward to sharing ways to prosper through communication in this environment with you.
