Here is some good news for you and your community.

After living in some of the most crowded cities in the world… Hong Kong and London, Merri and I have always gravitated to small towns.

After London. we lived first in Naples, Florida. Then it became too crowded… for us.

In Ecuador we found Cotacachi.

We love many social values that we find in small towns.

The Smalltown USA focus has been a small thread in our weaving of words.  Yet for years… we have been expecting this focus to emerge. I believe small towns have a future as better places to live in the years ahead… in Ecuador… Canada… the USA or wherever you are.

For over four decades our publishing efforts have been focused on seven main points.

These words come across to me as true.  Models of human expansive interaction are subject to the probability of a bell shaped curve.

In probability theory, the Gaussian distribution has a bell-shaped probability informally known as the bell curve.  Someone has an idea that helps society cooperate in a more efficient way.  As more people learn about this… the use grows.  Usually excessive use causes the benefit to decline with use.

For example, the idea of suburbs was great… until so many people moved there that congestion and extended supply lines reduced their effectiveness.

We can see these probabilities at work in the global economy as well.   Low cost transportation, communication and centralization of skills allows less expensive production until so much production has been moved that cultures, laws and desires clash.   Quality is given up for quantity and lower price until the benefits are beaten back by the law of diminishing returns.

In this process of human expansion, good… old time proven systems are often discarded… for awhile.

What Goes Around… Comes Around

As new evolutionary systems provide diminished returns… there is often a blowback that creates an upsurge in the good old  ways.

McKibben recognizes this fact in his prediction of a “community based economy”.

Small communities have long existed with good reason.   Many values they offer help make life simple and noble in an increasingly ignoble world.
