Ginger for Muscle Pain

This can lead to muscle pain!

One really inexpensive and delicious food that can help reduce this pain is ginger.

When this happens, here is a tasty, easy,  inexpensive way to reduce the pain.  A new study suggests that ginger may help alleviate pain from exercise-induced muscle injury.

There have been previous studies that show ginger’s ability to relieve  pain and have anti-inflammatory effects.

The new study was of  74 randomly selected subjects given two grams of raw or heat-treated ginger supplements or a placebo every day for 11 days. They did a series of exercise to create pain and inflammation. Then their arm function, inflammation and pain from the beginning of the study and for three days after exercise were compared.

Those who took the ginger had a 24 percent reduction in pain 24 hours after exercise.

Other studies have not been always as positive but who cares?  Ginger has such a low cost and is so easy to attain and use… why not?

Ginger has been shown to have many other medicinal benefits.

Ginger helps reduce morning sickness in pregnant women. Ginger’s effects on other types of nausea or emesis, such as travel sickness, chemotherapy-induced nausea, postoperative nausea.

Here is an excerpt from an article in Science daily “Daily Ginger Consumption Eases Muscle Pain by 25 Percent, Study Suggests”

For centuries, ginger root has been used as a folk remedy for a variety of ailments such as colds and upset stomachs. But now, researchers at the University of Georgia have found that daily ginger consumption also reduces muscle pain caused by exercise.

While ginger had been shown to exert anti-inflammatory effects in rodents, its effect on experimentally-induced human muscle pain was largely unexplored, said Patrick O’Connor, a professor in the College of Education’s department of kinesiology. It was also believed that heating ginger, as occurs with cooking, might increase its pain-relieving effects. has a great article on how to use ginger to reduce pain (linked below).  Here is an excerpt:

Step 1 Purchase a pill containing ginger to relieve your pain. You will most likely find ginger in pill form in an arthritis joint and muscle pill, although ginger pills also are sold on their own.

Step 2 Relieve gas, indigestion and nausea by eating up to 4g of fresh ginger root a day. Ginger can be purchased from your local supermarket in the produce section.

Step 3 Soothe your arthritis pain by rubbing ginger oil directly onto the pained joint. Ginger oil does not normally burn or harm the skin, but if you experience any rash-like symptoms, wash off the ginger oil and consult your doctor immediately.

Ginger & Stomach Aches.

Two home remedies for stomach aches include ginger.

#1: Mix 1 tsp of mint juice and 1 tsp of lime juice to a few drops of ginger juice and a pinch of black salt. Drink this mixture to alleviate pain.

#2: Grate a small piece of ginger and extract its juice. Apply this juice on the bottom of the belly and massage it in.

Here is how I make ginger juice.  Buy ginger at the store. Cut it into pieces and squeeze in a garlic press.

Ginger for digestion issues

Fresh ginger is very effective on stomach upset, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. Dry ginger powder mixed with nutmeg powder, ghee and honey or jaggery is given as a home medicine on loose motions with stomach pain. A smooth paste of ginger, lemon juice and black salt helps relieve chest pain occurred due to gas.

One of my favorite ways to use ginger is in a concoction that stimulates digestion.  Mix ginger and lemon juice with black salt and honey. Drink about an ounce before meals.

Black salt also called Kala Namak, is a pungent smelling purplish or pinkish-gray rock salt used in India. You can buy it in most Asian food stores or order it online for $6.50 at at Kala Namak Finishing Salt – India’s Fine Volcanic “Black Salt”.  A link to for this is below.

Ginger Caution. As with all things ginger requires moderation.  The most frequent side effects associated with ginger use are gastrointestinal upset, heartburn, gas and bloating. Ginger may also inhibit blood clotting, thus increasing bleeding risk.

This lettuce and our herb pots are right alongside our house… so a great salad or garnish is just a step out of the kitchen.

Even though I know by the time I add in my labor, my lettuce costs more than buying at the store… this is one place where specialization gets thrown out the window. There is something so miraculous about planting those tiny seeds and seeing food grow. Asian cooks prize ginger not only for its tasty, bulbous roots, but also for its young, grass like stems. Unless you live in the hottest part of the United States (USDA zone 10), you’ll have to grow this tender herb in a pot and bring it indoors in cold weather.

1.    Growing Ginger in a Container

2.    Step 1 
Buy fresh ginger roots at a grocery store or an Asian market. Look for fat tubers with numerous buds.

3.    Step 2
 Plant ginger in spring when you can supply warm enough temperatures, whether indoors or out. The dormant tubers will sprout only when the mercury hits 75 to 85 degrees F.

4.    Step 3
 Use a container that’s about 14 inches across and 12 inches deep and has excellent drainage. This size will hold three average-size tubers comfortably.

5.    Step 4
 Fill the container with potting soil enriched with plenty of compost.

6.    Step 5 
Soak the tubers in warm water overnight, then set them in the pot just below the soil surface, spacing them evenly, with the buds facing up.

7.    Step 6
 Set the container in light shade, indoors or out, depending on the temperature.

8.    Step 7
 Water lightly at first, then more heavily when growth starts. Keep plants dry in winter, when they’re dormant.

9.    Step 8
 Move plants outside only when the temperatures have reached 50 degrees F. In cooler weather, growth can be stunted.

10.    Step 9 
Shield plants from high winds, and move them indoors at the first sign of cool temperatures.

11.    Step 10
 Expect plants to reach maturity, and a height of 2 to 4 feet, in 10 months to a year.

A recent article in USA Today, “As obesity’s link to COVID-19 grows, one family that lost 24-year-old daughter diets together” (1) tells the tale.

The article says:  The parents and two brothers of Silvia Deyanira Melendez, 24, are all in therapy after losing their daughter and sister to COVID-19 on March 28.  She weighed more than 300 pounds with a body mass index of 60, double the BMI considered obese. This most likely contributed heavily to her Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and a heart condition that required open-heart surgery two years ago.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.


Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.? I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble). This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways. When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead. These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation. Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

When you burn fat you turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.
