The religious holiday season begins Cotacachi with Carnival in January immediately before Lent. Be careful. The favorite Carnival game for the kids is throwing water balloons. No target is exempt! There are public celebrations, parades and street parties.
People often wear costumes during the celebrations.
Lent then begins a forty-day period before Easter, starting Ash Wednesday. Lent begins on 25 February in 2009 and ends in April the day before Easter.
The parades usually revolve around Cotacachi Cathedral…quiet the night before no hint of what is to come.
