Here is Michelle’s twelfth lesson.

I can imagine some of you are thinking “spiders?” There are spiders on the Internet? Yup there are. And there are a few spiders you want to see daily!

So what exactly is a spider?

A “spider” is an electronic robot that travels the web examining websites in order to add them to a search engine database and rank them according to the specific ranking criteria for that search engine. Spiders essentially “crawl the web”.

“Spiders are a good thing because the big search engines like Google, Yahoo and others will use a spider (actually many spiders) to examine web pages for inclusion in their massive search indexes. Their spiders will also come back and visit web pages “every so often”, so as to keep their index up to date with any changes you’ve made since the last time the spider visited.” And this is a very good thing because the more spiders visit your site the more likely you are to have your pages indexed with the search engine and that means more traffic for you!

So how exactly do you attract these little fellows?

Good Question! Have you ever heard of Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
To put it simply, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the art/science of trying to optimize Web pages so search engines (meaning our friendly spider) will find them. A person that focuses their efforts on search engine optimization is called a “SEOer.”

There is much debate over the best way to optimize your web site and if you are willing to pay a pretty penny there are lots of folks out there willing to tell you they have the answers! The truth is there are some pretty standard rules to optimization and as long as you follow them and provide your readers with high quality content you should have a friendly spider infestation before you know it!

Tips to Web Site Optimization: (does this mean tips to get more spiders? – needs to be tied in)

Choose the right keyword or keyword phrase
This is essential to ranking well with the search engines. Make sure that you check what people are typing in for your niche by consulting keyword research tools. You are looking for high value demand key words or key phrases. That is, keywords that lots of people are looking for and very few web sites provide the information.

Properly place your keyword or keyword phrase on your web page.
This is vital to being indexed by the search engines and encouraging the spider (spiders?) to further investigate your site. You see, the spider looks at certain parts of your page to determine “what exactly your page is about” and you want to be consistent in the information you supply the spider (spiders?). So, using the “EXACT” keyword or keyword phrase in the bullets below should keep your spiders well fed and happy. Use keyword or key phrase:

In your “file name”
In your “page title”
In your “page description”
In your “keywords list”
In the first 90 characters of your page
In a “link”
Use your keyword throughout your content but, don’t over do it, spiders are not happy when they see the same words over and over again. Make it so it flows naturally.

Over-deliver your CONTENT

OK, I can’t say this enough, people on the internet today are looking for INFORMATION! By over-delivering original, high quality content, you are assured to please both your real visitor and your spiders!

Keep it REAL!
Don’t try fancy tricks or techniques to get around the rules; “they” will find out. Search Engines will gladly ban sites that try to trick spiders!

Whatever web-hosting program you are using be sure to optimize each page. This will keep you ranking well with the primary search engines and keep the spiders visiting.

Look for my future articles where we discuss additional monetization options, additional optimization techniques, incoming links, e-zines, link exchange programs and much more…..
