Plus investing worldwide enhances safety as well.
Plus there are a few special and rare places that provide extra potential…such as the Galapagos.
There are two reasons why few places are as special as this pristine group of islands. The first is the incredible brand image of the Galapagos. The second is the enormous demand for tourism there. The Galapagos is totally unique. There is no similar destination in the world.
Environmental sensitivity is one of the fastest growing concerns in the world. Galapagos is perhaps the crown jewel of environmental tourism and … there is nothing else like it…anywhere.
I have written about opportunities in land based investments in these islands many times over the past decade.
Plus twice, I have been able to let readers know about environmentally correct opportunity in the Galapagos at sea.
Land based opportunity there offers growth potential but the biggest business for Galapagos tourism is cruise based. Merri’s and my friend, Kjetil (pronounced Jaatell) Haugan is from Norway but has lived in Ecuador as longer as we have. Kjetil has a number of successful businesses, a Spanish school, a travel agency and a cruise operation.
Kjetil has built two Galapagos cruise ships to date, the first two being the Athala and Athela II. These are sleek tour catamarans.
They have huge staterooms.
And are luxuriously appointed.
Here are some guests enjoying a cruise and Athala II.
Kjetil started operating Athala in July 2006 and had almost full occupancy from day one. He made more than $ 300,000 in the first 6 months of operating the first Athala.
Athala II has had an even better occupancy so far.
Now Kjetil is building ship number three and is offering shares in this ongoing business that has showed itself to be very profitable so far.
Kjetil estimates that this business will bring in approximately $800,000 per year after taxes and he is looking to sell 50% of the shares for $1.5 million US dollars.
Kjetil set up a contract with tour operator, Grand Circle for Athala I through 2010 and this seld many of his tours. Kjetil’s two travel businesses Haugan Cruises and Columbus Tours sold the remaining space. However Kjetil intends to use his own travel company to sell all the space on Athala II.
I have had many dealings with Kjetil over the years and have found him hard working, intelligent and honest (or I would not share this with you), I have not investigated this deeply and if you have an interest I cannot emphasize more that you should exercise normal due diligence.
I am not involved in this opportunity in any way nor do I gain in any way from introducing him to you.
You can also see more about Kjetil’s first boat, Athala 1, at his cruise website www.galapagosluxurycruise.com
The shares Kjetil is offering are of the company Galapagos Dreams S. A. (GDSA) that has been specifically established to build and operate a new 32 meter, 16 passenger, luxury class motor catamaran, “Spirit of Galapagos”, in the Galapagos Islands .
I like this because Galapagos cruises are in a seller’s market and there is a rising demand but restricted supply. There are only 84 licenses (this has been the limit for 20 years) and 70 cruise vessels offering tours. This means that most of the cruise ships operate with 90% occupancy.
Second, the GDSA project team is experienced, having already built and operated 2 luxury catamarans for Galapagos cruise operations.
All businesses have risk and the offering circular covers many. The largest however is the political climate in Ecuador . The new President prefers local to foreign ownership. GDSA has made itself one of the few companies to have local (Galapagos) shareholders to mitigate this risk.
Protection against risks comes from the GDSA team’s experience in building boats and operating its first two Galapagos catamarans. During the last two years, both the Atala and Athala II have done well. The Athala II is regarded as one of the best yachts on the islands in terms of operation, comfort and technical qualities. Kjetil plans to make the “Spirit of Galapagos” even better.
Kjetil has a 52 page offering circular for those interested. They can reach him at email@example.com
