Ecuador Crime Report

Ecuador crime is something everyone should understand if they plan to live in Ecuador.

Another message about crime in Ecuador is at

Here we look at what readers who have visited Ecuador say about criminal activity in this Andean nation.

We often fear the unknown, especially when it comes to crime. Often it requires that we take a global view top sometimes gain perspective.

For example you will see below statistics suggesting that regarding crime, Ecuador is safer than many Western countries such as the US, UK, Canada, Mexico, Australia, France and more.

Yet crime can take place where we least suspect.

Last week a friend who lives in Ashville, North Carolina which is considered one of the top ten places in the US to live told me a local story. One of her employees took her boyfriend to an outdoor party.

Someone (totally unknown) went mad, slashed the boyfriend’s throat with a broken bottle and as many horrified onlookers stood by threw him in a bonfire. 911 was called but could not find the location. The boyfriend died.

Crime is everywhere. However in Ecuador as anywhere one has to have caution.

One reader, an American who has lived in Quito, Ecuador for over 20 years just sent this note.

“Gary, I agree with your observations about crime in Ecuador and Quito and would like to only add a few observations from the changes I have noticed in the last 5 years.

“Our office consists of several houses in a good neighborhood in Quito,

several blocks away from the Carolina park. Used to be safe but now one has to be much more careful and thoughtful about what you carry, how you leave and lock your car etc. Several months ago one of our employees had their car stolen at dusk only a block away from our office. One evening leaving our office at dusk a Brazilian employee was held up at gun point and had her lap top taken.

“The car theft of the Trooper could have likely been prevented if the
employee had used a lock he had made to go around the shifter. But he was forgetful that day. The Brazilian was foolish to be carrying a lap top in a lap top case. Advertisement to be robbed. Someone had been checking her out for a period of time and finally moved in. This happens in various offices and neighborhoods in Quito where unmarked cars, with several occupants pick on unsuspecting individuals.

“These days one needs to be more proactive and talk to people in the hotels or restaurants or offices and see what are the new tricks and games that are being played.

“And finally it’s basic economics. With some 8 presidents in the last 10 years there has not been sufficient continuity to guarantee steady investment which leads to less jobs, more unemployment and increased illegal activity especially in the large cities.

“But Ecuador is still a great adventure. And places like Cotacachi seem

immune from many of the problems which plague other parts of the country which is why it is delightful to walk around there in the evening enjoying the architecture, restaurants and friendly people.”

This is really good advice for Ecuador and anywhere. I just returned from Rockwood, Oregon. When I grew up there, this was WASP suburbia and safe day or night. Now mom (who has lived in the house for 46 years) has to lock all the windows and take many security precautions as there have been several break-ins at her house. Fred Meyer a huge WalMart predecessor in the Northwest shout down its local store here due to so much crime.

We would not think of letting our grandchildren out at night in this

Crime in the more crowded, faster paced world is everywhere but to put this in perspective here is what our son Jake wrote:

“Dad, I think a quick look at international crime statistics and ‘murder maps’ will show Ecuador doesn’t even register. shows the top 50 countries for murder per 1000 population. They include the US and UK

but not Ecuador. Jake.”
