International Investing Brings Freedom from Protection

by | Apr 23, 2007 | Archives

International investing brings freedom from protection because it gives us so many options. The main reasons for living, investing and doing business globally are broader horizons, greater choice of opportunity, more freedom, adventure, fun and the ability to always be in the sun!

How can international investing enhance freedom?

Most nations restrict their citizens in various and many ways. Often they take place in the most subtle form. International investing allows us to reach beyond borders.

Take, for example, this note a reader just sent.

“Gary, I ran into a frustrating case of federal regulation today. I took my new hybrid car for service, and requested they disconnect the alarm that sounds when the seat belt is disconnected. They were actually scared. ‘We can’t do that, it’s against federal regulation, we can go to jail, and/or be sued.’ Now I guess I just need a shade tree mechanic.”

From seat belts to helmets to the types of medicine (such as fresh fruit juice) we feed our kids, residents of most countries are regulated in some ways.

When you are global and do international investing, you can choose to live and do business where the regulations suit you best.

There can also be some tax benefits. For example if you are a citizen of most nations, if you live abroad, you do not have to pay tax in your country of citizenship.

The US is one of the few exceptions. America taxes their residents abroad but only at a very high income level.

Take this example sent to me by the accountant of our son and daughter who live in the UK and Africa respectively.

“Gary, For 2006, the maximum tax exclusion for US citizens who live abroad has increased to $82,400. You can get full details at Publication 54 (2006), Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad

Another reader who attended a course wrote this:

“Dear Gary, I went to my accountant and was pleasantly surprised when he told me I could deduct your course and airfare. Ecuador here I come! I am feeling much better and hope the Chinese medicine continues to do its thing…Dr. Mishra was right this Chinese doctor is really helping. Plus my accountant said I could deduct airfare and Dr. also. I am really looking forward to coming to Ecuador. My new good friend thanks to your course, wants to come too. My accountant also told me to put my small business profits in my Roth IRA (new deduction available this year). Please say hi to Merri and keep me advised of your next seminars in Ecuador.”

One reason many of our readers are moving to Ecuador is they feel more freedom here.

Until next message, may your international investing help you feel free.
