Over the past year, this site have focused on trends. Spotting trends is the wellspring of wealth. Nothing is as important to successful investing and business as spotting good trends. “Cultural Creatives” are one of the biggest trends we may ever see.
I am updating my publishing course and this is the six and last message in a series that unveils one brand new lesson from this course which is how to be self fulfilled through Self Publishing. This lesson highlights why understanding Cultural Creatives (who by the way we call Dragonflies) is so vital to our economic success.

The last installments have introduced three subcultures (Moderns, Traditionals and Cultural Creatives), who they are and the publishing errors I made learning about the markets. We continue:
Here is the big picture. Back in the 1960s, I stumbled across the idea of international investing at an early age by sheer dumb luck. This stuck with me because of who I was. In demographic terms I already had a bit of CC within (my love of new and exotic places). My wanderlust was correctly timed for the market place just then. I did what I loved for years. The going was tough to begin. I was early in the market. Yet international investing just happened to appeal to all three subcultures. The Moderns loved the money. The Traditionals wanted to put their money offshore to avoid paying tax to an immoral government. The CCs were out there with me having an adventure and hopefully doing something good for humanitarian reasons at the same time. Business just became better and better. We made a lot of money.
Then the markets changed. So did Merri and I. International investing lost a lot of its uniqueness and we moved beyond just money to write about alternative health, ethical investing and such. In the process we lost touch with both the Moderns and the Traditionals. I lost focus with 74% of my readership!
Fortunately we had enough CC readers so progress continued as we learned. Finally one of those readers was kind enough to send me the book. Thank you Robert!
Had I known about Cultural Creatives from the time we began to shift, there would have been a lot that could have been done. Reports and courses could have been segmented for each market. We could have marketed differently (we would have) to our Traditionals and Modern readers. Plus I now see that a lot of what I wrote was aimed at converting Moderns and Traditionals to become CCs. This was not my purpose. I was just grappling with what I felt.
This lesson end s pointing out there are three subcultures in the Western world. Know them. Know which you are and know which you are marketing to.
The Golden Rule of Publishing works! Follow your heart (with the priviso know your market).
Life and markets change. Give yourself a break and go with the flow. This is a CC thing but it will make your publishing more enjoyable if you do. Life will be more fun.

The Benefits of Trading a Rolls Royce for a Beat Up 87 Ford
Recently two friends stopped by to visit Merri and me at the farm. Their reaction to my truck leaves a financial message for us all.
These friends knew us first when we lived in Florida and I drove a Rolls. So they really laughed when I arrived to pick them up at the local hardware store in my Ford pickup. Let me tell you about this Ford.
Brown Betty I call her. 1987-brown-rusting, scratched-143,000 miles-long bed-four wheel drive-eight speed stick on the floor-big engine-huge six ply snow tires. I bought her for $2,400 bucks.
This truck is tough! When Merri, me and Ma (our pumpkin patch hound) have a heavy job from carrying railroad ties (we are building a bridge on the land) to clean up the environment, from taking rusted barbed wire we pulled out of the creek to hauling years of garbage left on the land the dump, the truck gets the job done. We don’t worry about the innumerable dents scratches and nicks we put on that truck for a minute.
This is the perfect vehicle for the farm. Rain, mud, frozen roads or snow, this truck goes. With chains she runs like a Sherman tank anywhere and everywhere! Our inner roads are narrow-lined with scratchy shrubs. We’re always carrying some sticky, heavy load. Who cares?
Am I worried about breaking down? Not a chance. Our friend Billy lives up the road. He’s a master mechanic in the old style (why use a muffler when a pop can will do? He’ll keep it running forever at a low cost. Plus we help keep the people up here remain employeed.
What does having this beat up truck instead of a Rolls have to do with wealth? Well it costs a lot less to run and insure it. But this is not the point.
We also fit in better here in the mountains which has helped us make friends and contacts that have been enormously helpful. This is not the point either.
The point is this truck is what I really want and need. The Rolls was what others convinced me I needed.
Knowing ourselves and living lives the way we truly want (instead of as we are expected) gives us enormous freedom.
When we are free, we gravitate towards what we love and success becomes easier. This is the path to true wealth.
I may look poorer when I pull up in my Ford, but I am happier (actually I am wealthier). When you live to be fulfilled instead of impressing others, finances make miraculous turn-arounds. Try it and see!
