Please pass the note below (sent to me by my daughter Francesca) to as many people as you can. This information points out an important far I have been harping on at my courses for the past three years. Our global economy is based on growing in a way that cannot be sustained. The essence of the global economy is for all nations rich and poor to have a lifestyle similar to that of the wealthy Western nations.
There are not sufficient natural resources for this to happen. The world is striving for a brass ring which it cannot attain. In addition even if it did, this would not bring global happiness as the social problems of the West attest. I share these thoughts partly in the hopes that it helps us all be more aware of the problems of our resources. But I also pass them along because these facts are having a powerful impact on economics and should influence the way we do business and invest.
We can see how natural resources affect economics in many ways. We see it today in the oil crisis. We can see it here in north Carolina where small farmers are being put out of the cattle business by a Federal law that forces them to fence their creeks (to protect the watershed).
We can see why the an economy described in the “Dream Society” where spiritual products and services will become more prominent than material products. This type of economy will be forced upon society by the lack of natural resources.
You can learn more about how we are working with Land of the Sun foundation to save forests and natural resources by clicking on http://www.littlehorsecreek.com/ecuador/landofsun.shtml site.
Here is Francesca’s message.
The Brazilian congress is now voting on a project that will reduce the amazon forest to 50% of its size. The area to be deforested is 4 times the size of Portugal and would be mainly used for agriculture and pastures for live stock… All the wood is to be sold to international markets in the form of wood chips, by multinational companies.
The truth is that the soil in the amazon forest is useless without the forest itself. Its quality is very acidic and the region is prone to constant floods. At this time more than 160.000 square kilometres deforested with the same purpose, are abandoned and in the process of becoming deserts.
